OpenAI has announced that they will be shutting down its video app, Sora. The Sora video app was launched back in September and allowed users to create AI-generated video content that could be shared easily. It was basically OpenAI’s attempt to break into social media, and there were plans for licensing deals with media companies such as Disney so that you could use characters such as Mickey Mouse and Iron Man in your videos.
OpenAI has now announced its closure following a strategic decision to refocus on its core business. Sora ran into two problems: first, it did not catch on and build the anticipated user base; and secondly, AI video generation is expensive in terms of the computing resources needed to create these videos.
