OpenAI has announced that they will be adding adverts at the bottom of answers provided by ChatGPT. Initially, these will only be seen in the “free” versions of ChatGPT. This move is not surprising given the tens of billions that OpenAI has committed to building AI infrastructure, but it does raise the question of whether the enshittification (Doctorow, 2025) (sidenote – a really interesting book that is available as audiobook on the Durham University Libby app) of ChatGPT has begun and how this will affect the reliability of the answers it gives.
Anthropic the maker of Claude is certainly alive to this possibility and they air this humorous ad during the Superbowl.
